“Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim” — A Comprehensive Analysis
- Lexical and Literal Meaning
Arabic:
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
English Translation:
“In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.”
(A) What the words mean
Bismi (بِسْمِ)
This comes from the word Ism (اسم) which means a persons Name or what they are known for it is like a Sign that people know you by.
Allah (ٱللَّهِ) is the God He is the One who made everything and takes care of all things.
Ar-Rahman (ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ) is very kind to all people He is merciful to everyone.
Ar-Rahim (ٱلرَّحِيمِ) is especially kind, to believers He gives them mercy that never ends.
(B) What the words say
When we say “I start with the name of Allah, who’s very kind and merciful.”
This means we are asking for Allahs help before we do anything we are asking Allah for His blessings and mercy.
We say this to get Allahs help to get His blessings and to get His mercy we say Bismi Allah to get Allahs help to get Allahs blessings and to get Allahs mercy.

The phrase “Bismillah” did not come about because of one event. Instead it was taught as a principle of Islam.
The scholars of Tafsir say that every important action should start with the name of Allah.
This is because previous prophets also began their actions by saying Allahs name.
In the Quran there is a letter from Sulaiman (AS) which says:
“Indeed it is from Solomon and indeed it reads: In the name of Allah, the Gracious, the Most Merciful.”

Tafsir Ibn Kathir
Ibn Kathir explains that “Bismillah” is a prayer for blessings and help from Allah.
He says “Ar-Rahman” refers to Allahs mercy for all creation.
“Ar-Rahim” refers to His mercy for believers, in the Hereafter.
Tafsir al-Tabari
Al-Tabari states that “Bismillah” is a declaration that Allah’s one.
It also means that humans need Allahs help to do anything.
Tafsir al-Qurtubi
Al-Qurtubi mentions that saying “Bismillah” removes pride.
It also helps to create a sense of humility in a persons heart.
Maariful Quran
Mufti Muhammad Shafi explains that every lawful action should start with “Bismillah”.
He says that it brings success and blessings into ones actions.

Sunan Abi Dawud
The Prophet said:
Any important matter that is not started with the name of Allah will not have Allahs blessing.
Sahih al-Bukhari
The Prophet would say Bismillah before he did things like:

* Performing ablution
* Writing letters
* Reciting the Qur’an
Jami at-Tirmidhi
If we do not say Allahs name before we eat Shaytan will eat with us.

a statement that says there is only one Allah
